There is just so much really really good walking in the Slieve Blooms. I have walked up Glen Barrow so many times and it never disappoints. I started bringing the children there when they were small and they used to love playing in the pools and throwing sticks in to watch them drop over the waterfalls.
The walk up Carrolls Hill has a great reward at the top with brilliant views across Offally looking towards the Shannon and across the Blooms themselves. Then you drop down into a secluded valley full of mature pines and sit outside the scouts log cabin, listen to the little stream and the birds - great spot for beef roll and a nice cuppa.
What about starting at the base of the Glendine - a valley bursting with all the different colours of the ashes, oaks beeches and evergreens. Then you rise steadily all the way to the top and rest by Clear lake - an almost perfect circle of water of unknown depth. Again another regular spot for the happy sandwich brigade. Some say this lake was the result of a meteor strike about a hundred years ago. Could be treasure down there - you know what that stuff is worth !!
Just outside Cadamstown is the gorge where we go during the summer to jump off waterfalls into the deep rock pools and follow the deep ravines cut through the stone over a milllion and one years ago.
Wherever you go to explore in the Blooms you will love the silence, the
great surprise of the deer just around the next corner, the beautiful
valleys, the buzzards, those intimate little villages with the cracking
little pub and the barperson who wants to know your life story, the views, the
castles, the chat, the pint at the end, the stranger you meet along the way
who smiles and would stop in a heartbeat if you say anything more then howwa
ya, the abandoned stone cottages that once housed a family of 16, the old
churches, the tallest pines and the golden beeches, the little streams, the
gentle roll of the hills, looking accross the country from the summit of Ard
Eireann and picking out all the other peaks you climberd like the Lug, Mt
Leinster and the stairs, the Commeraghs and Galtee Mor.
If you have any notion of a really good weekend away then you'd be mad not to consider this offer. If you want to find out more just fill in your details below, click send and some weekend between now and Christmas I am going to meet you somewhere in the Blooms.
